At Amanda's house, we look up and see a roof buried under tarps. Inside there is a hole in the ceiling, and Amanda tells us the roof has not been replaced since she was a little girl. She is in her forties now.

A few months ago it finally gave out, and hundreds of pounds of ceiling came down on her daughter's fiancé in the middle of the night while he was asleep, in the same house where her six month old granddaughter Charlotte sleeps every night.

The reason none of it has been fixed is that in January, after twenty five years of marriage, Amanda's husband left. He took the car, he took their money, and he never paid the property taxes. Over two days we come back to tear out the ceiling and replace the roof, and Amanda has no idea what is actually coming.

[COLD OPEN: Amanda's face the moment she sees it. Cut before she finishes.]

VO: "This woman is about to lose the house she grew up in."

[Hard cut. Cole at the door, water filter box under his arm. Knocking.]

VO: "Yesterday we knocked on her door to install a free water filter."

[Slow tilt up the front of the house. The tarps. Hold.]

VO: "Then we looked up."

[Inside. Push in on the hole. Amanda soundbite]

[The caved-in section. Then Dayna holding Charlotte.]

VO: "A few months ago that ceiling came down on her daughter's fiancé while he was asleep."

[Hold on Charlotte for one beat.]

VO: "Her granddaughter is six months old. She sleeps in this house."

[The house from the street.]

VO: "And in just a few months, the county takes it."

[Crew pulling away. Then half-obscured, crew on the roof at sunrise, tarps coming off.]

VO: "So we told her we'd come back tomorrow to finish the water filter. But we were actually coming back with so much more."
