[COLD OPEN: extreme close on Jim, eyes filling, jaw tight as he tries to hold it back. His daughter beside him, already crying. Warm acoustic underscore already playing.]
VO (Cole): "Nobody in this house saw any of this coming."
[CUT TO: Cole and the crew at the front door, Zaxby's bags in hand, everyone relaxed and smiling.]
VO: "Because when we first showed up, we were just there to drop off their dinner."
[Footage: handing over the bags, the family laughing, the daughter's husband in frame.]
[Beat. Music lifts slightly.]
VO: "What we didn't tell them was that we were coming back."
[Quick montage, partially obscured: crew on the property, ladders, tarps, dust, tools moving fast, reaction faces in flashes.]
VO: "See, Jim's house had gotten so bad his own family was scared it was going to collapse on top of him. They had even started talking about putting him in a retirement home, because staying here just wasn't safe anymore.
So when we brought him free food, he was so grateful. But he could have never expected what came next."
[END FRAME: blurred wide shot inside the redone room, the new bed just out of clear view, Jim’s hand coming up over his mouth.]
VO: "We're going to change this family's life. Make sure you watch to the end, because the thing we saved for last is the part that finally broke him."
When we knocked on this door, all we had was their dinner. The family laughed, said thank you, and waved us off. What we didn't tell them was that we were coming back.
Jim's house had gotten so bad his own family was scared it was going to collapse on top of him. They were already talking about putting him in a retirement home, not because they wanted to, but because staying there just wasn't safe anymore. Nobody in that house saw another way out.
So we got to work. We took on the worst of it, the things that made this house unsafe for him to live in, and we didn't stop until it felt like home again. Then we brought the family together for the reveal, and we saved the biggest surprise for last. Make sure you watch to the end, because that's the part that finally broke him.
This year we're giving away $1,000,000 of free work to hard-working people in need. This family got us one step closer. Subscribe to follow the mission and see where the next dollar goes.
Know somebody who deserves help next? A neighbor, a coworker, someone who never asks for anything. Tell us their story in the comments. We read every single one.
